One last update from 10-30-14

This is my finally blog on these kinds of things. I hope that everyone who read them enjoyed them and don't be afraid to leave a comment on what you thought on these types of blog entries. This update is from 10-30-14. It is as always the courier journal.

The good things was that it had a equal amount of the types of stories and one kind wasn't over powering the others. The last overall good thing on the courier journal is the amount of stories they do. I feel like this is the best news types that my class follows because of the amount of stories and the different types they do. i do understand that the others are T.V. and that they are more updated and they have less time. But still if I had to choice it would be the courier journal.

The bad thing about this day's paper was the low amount of international stories yes ther is an equal amount but there still could be more international I feel.

The link to a story that is would give you an idea of the range would be :http://www.courier-journal.com/videos/sports/horses/horse-biz/2014/10/29/18124459/

Throwback Tuesday on the Courier Journal 10-28-14

As a lot of you all would I know I follow the the news. Well every now and then I think want to update people on what the news type I follow is doing well and/or bad.

The good things was that it has different stories as a headline then the others. A few of the types of news have the same as the others and the online one might be different. But for the main part it has similar stories.

The bad thing was that: They had a lot of celebrity fluff and crime all together. I understand that people want to learn about that but maybe health and politics considering when they printed this the election was coming up soon.

A link to show that they used a different yet still important headline would be: http://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/local/2014/10/27/msd-workers-threaten-strile/18030527/  This was one of the headlines of the day and it was just as important about the story of the police chase.

Flashback Friday on the courier journal on 10-8-14

Hey it’s Friday! You know what that means on my blog? Well if you are new to my blog it means Flashback Friday!

An over view on the courier journal from 10-8-14:
  • ·         They talked mainly about national news
  • ·         They had the most stories in politics and government
  • ·         They didn't have as many stories as the other sources seemed to have.

A positive about this day in the courier journal would be: That they made sure that the topics were more things that matter more than things don’t affect the people that read it. This can be a positive because it means that they are reading things that can have an impact on their day or week and not things that have an impact on the people in the New York.

A negative about this day is that it was mainly national news and sometimes this can be a bad thing because people want to know what is happening the day they read the paper in their city or state. If they wanted to read mainly about the nation then they can watch a new channel that talks only about national news.

Here is a link that shows you that they talk about local things (check negative for the day for more information on why I picked this : http://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/local/2014/10/08/easy-ways-go-green-yard-waste/16905707/

Thanks for joining me in a flashback Friday.

Throwback Thursday on the courier journal on 10-10-14

Hey it is Thursday! You know what that means? It means Throwback Thursday!

An overview from the courier journal from 10-10-14 would be that day they talked about mainly local stories about crime and politics and government. On that day they hardly talked about celebrity fluff and social issues and human interest and business and economy.  Here is something good about the courier journal they divided up how much they talk about. They don’t always have a set amount of stories on this and that they seem to try to make it even in what they talk about. Also this day with their headlines they talked about Ebola, so for 2 classes in a row it seems like that they make Ebola their main topic.

Here a link to the online courier journal where you can see the Ebola headline: http://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/local/2014/10/10/st-soldiers-gear-fight-ebola-outbreak/17003605/

Thanks for joining me for a Throwback Thursday.

Way Back Wednesday on the Courier Journal on 10-13-14

It's Wednesday! And you know what that means? Way Back Wednesday! It may just be about yesterday but it is still in the past.

An overview from the courier journal from yesterday would be that for the most part is local story that would fit in to the social issues, human interest, and education. They don’t talk about crime or accidents.  But the stories they talk about  business and economy.  Now the online version is around the same. Also from knowing what the other sources of news have as headlines that the courier journal that they talk about things that the others might not even mention. For example yesterday they talked about Ebola and the rest talked about the hit and run that happened. Also that the courier journal didn't talk about international news yesterday. Also that the top news for them online is mainly entertainment. It should be more of the election and news updates on the hit and run suspect.
Here is a link to the courier journal and here this is one of the top stories they had: http://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/local/2014/10/14/deadbeat-derided-mixing-reality-tv-court/17267367/

That's the update for today on the courier journal. Comeback later for a Throwback Thursday or maybe a Flashback Friday.

Happiness

I looked at how many people had looked at me blog today. I was shocked to see a 102 there. I was like i hope i get at least 20.  Then there was a part to see where the people are from. It wasn't just America like I was thinking. There are 2 other countries there-Germany and Venezuela! My friend Cassie saw it and thought I put something on one of my social media to get these views. I was like no I don't tell people about my blog.
This was a kind of thank you for reading my blog. I really like to know that people read these and isn't just school!

Way back Wednesday:

It is Wednesday that means way back Wednesday on my blog. If you read my blog yesterday then you would know that I planned on talking about the printing press.  I'm not going to completely explain this like I did for the others. I'm going to mix it up! I will stick to what I think is the most important about the news press. I think that most important part was the literacy. This means people get the gift of being able to read and write. You are reading this yes? Well you have the gift of literacy. I am assuming that you went to school and learned and you parents knew. Meaning that your parents and other adults have already learned. This gift became available partly because of the metal printing press. Before this only the wealthy could read and understand what things like the laws said. Now it seems like everyone can read. If you think that the gift of literacy is not the important thing that came from the printing press, then comment and tell me! I am always open to feedback.

Throwback Tuesday: Communications

It's Tuesday! That means Throwback Tuesday for me. Communications is my topic today. Let me start this off with that I loved this lecture. I never really thought the steps to mass communication. I did not think about there being multiple ways to interfere with it. I did not think even that you could be more than one. I personally thing we talked more about mass than the others and I feel like they are important and should be equally talked about.  But I am only a newbie in this magnet and in the world of journalism and communication and I do not know what is important for the exact reasons. I can only say what I infer from around me.

Communications:

  • Individual- This is two people talking to face to face. It has instant feedback. It is like a phone call.
  • Group- It is one person talking to more people. Eye contact and body language are important. It as well has instant feedback.
Remember that there two have the chance to become mass!

  • Mass- The important things about this are there is no immediate feedback and it travels though time and space. It is the the internet in the simplest way possible. There are 5 steps to become mass communication. This blog is mass communication.
  1.  Stimulus- This is the idea.
  2. Encoding- This is getting the idea down into the real world. That could be writing it down on a piece of paper even,
  3. Transmission- This is getting your idea into a way for some to see it.
  4. Decoding-This is getting the information in your reach like on your computer screen ready to read or the book in your hand.
  5. Internalization- This is internalizing the information you just read.
An example of these 5 steps are
  1. I had the idea of this blog.
  2. I created the blog.
  3. I posted a blog entry on to the internet.
  4. You went on your computer and found my blog.
  5. You read my blog entry and you can somewhat remember what I said.
Now there are things that can block you from these steps and that would be filters and impediments. To remember these I think of Mr. Miller asking us "Did you hear about the radio for the deaf?"-That is physical. Then there is mental which is something in your brain will not let you. I think that these are the most important ones of all. If you disagree you can always comment somewhere on my blog and we can talk about it! Lastly remember I will be back for Way Back Wednesday where I plan on talking about the printing press!

Magazine Monday

There are many types of mass communication. One of them is magazines. We learned about this Thursday. I decided to talk about it today and give it a cool and clever name.
  • ·         Magazines and newspapers- The difference is the magazines are made from better paper and they have more content. Magazines are made to last a long time and newspapers not so much.
  • ·         Photojournalism- Magazines have been doing this for years and it was started by national geographic printing pictures the government had for public record. It was till around 24 years ago that newspapers starting to do it. Magazines are better at it because they have been doing it longer and have a better understatement of what they are doing.
  • ·         Personality profiles-This an interview but not just one person, but yet it is about one person. It was a kind if start to celebrities. They would ask you question about yourself and then ask your friends and family the same questions. This is something magazines started doing before others.
  • ·         Key features- This includes 1st national medium, national audience- it went to everyone in the US wasn't only certain people, national identity- This means we started to look at Americans and go oh we can do that! Oh this American is a great writer, National advertising- This means that you could sell to America not just the town you live in.
  • ·         Postal Act of 1879- This is the act that made it so that people could send out a pound of magazines for a penny. This is thanks to the government. Magazines can't take credit for it. But it was the government subsidizing magazines.  This made magazines cheaper.
  • ·         Long forum journalism- Magazines were the first mass communication to have stories that were long and detailed.  It was investigating journalism,
  • ·         Demassification- This happened when radios and TV. came along. People went to the more technology advanced things. It might have been cheaper and more than just the US that you could get to.

I enjoyed learning about magazines. I myself read magazines and when you know the history you think so much about what you are reading the steps it went through to become what it is in your hands. I liked this lecture; I personally think that we should talk more about format of magazines. It seems like something would give you more of a wow that is a change from then and now.

Media Critique

There is a problem in the WLKY homepage. We see that they realized that people like to go on their local station for news and see who won the football game, whether it is a U of L or UK game. Now there isn't  a problem with a local news website having sports on the website, just not next to the news as if it is something like a crime or traffic update.

When someone goes to the WLKY homepage they can see the news that is late breaking. But they can also click the news tab and find a certain part of news. Under the news tab there is the high school playbook link; this will take the person to who won the latest high school game and the one before that.

The breaks the 9 principles of make the important interesting. This makes the interesting to local people (high school playbook) important to people. This makes it seem like it is important news that people need to know, whether it be to carry on their day or to plan for the time ahead. They can fix this by having their main top part with links have a sports one. This could have sports and the high school play book. This could also have the PGA tournament there for the time it was current.

Another one it breaks is the principle of inclusive. They seem to be blowing the sport section. Well more of sports in general. They don’t include or think about the people that don't like sports and have sites and shows for getting updates on the sports.

Throwback Thursday: Binary Models

It's Thursday! You know what that means? It's throwback Thursday!
Binary models- (binary means 2) There are 4 binary models.
  1. Hot-Cool is all about the amount attention needed for the mass communication. A hot would be books. A cool would be music. Now there is internet that can be both.
  2.  Elitist-Populist is about the message. Elitist care about a certain group of people and don't care if they lose money for example PBS. Then populist is that they don't care what they say as long they make money for example hint hint Miley Cyrus. Not naming names there...
  3. Content-Distribution is one side makes it and the other side sells it. Content makes and Distribution sells. Lately companies are thinking why not just making ourselves and sell that? They cut out the middle man and make money. One example is Netflix. They make shows and charge people money to watch other shows.
  4. Information- Entertainment is all about the content. One is like the news and the other is gossip.  This is starting to completely go to entertainment.

This is interesting to me because I didn't think that mediums could be so many things. I figured there would be like 2 different ones.  Also I didn't know the main companies that own so much. You think a lot of shows own themselves? You would be wrong. You think what could a company like Disney and you hear some and you are like wait what?  I liked learned about the binary models. It was interesting to learn so much that I assumed and that what I assumed was wrong in some ways.

Response to Skylar M.

I read your thoughts on the monopoly lecture we had. I too had only heard the board game monopoly. Turns out it's a big business term that is illegal. We play games as kids and never really think that this is something real or based of something real. We just see it as a fun game to play. But yes the game monopoly is a lot like the real thing. It made me think that even as kids we all wanted to win and get the most money at the end, we didn't think about buying business for loads of money or the fact that we were being just like big companies in real life.

I also was interested in the horizontal and vertical monopoly. We play to get all the color groups, that in a way is a horizontal monopoly. Then some of us want one of every color group that is a vertical monopoly. I played this game this weekend with my friend and she bought all the reds and blues and yellows, then she bought one of every other color she hadn't gotten too. I didn't create a monopoly; i just bought the one i saw he land on the most....

But overall yes monopoly is a lot like the board game we have all played once in our lives.

Response to Olivia E.

I read your thoughts on the principles. I disagree with the statement that the first two are the most important. I personally think that they are all equally important, if we only focus on those two things, which I do think are important, then we would be missing so many things. For example if watchdog wasn't one then who is to say that we would still have an idea of what really happens in our government behind the scenes.  I think that we need to know what is really happening and it is up to the journalist. If the sources they have aren't verified then who is to say that it is accurate? We cannot believe everything and yes part of that is the truth, but still we need to be able to say yes that really happened.

So personally they are all equal and if two were the most important then I do not think the others would be taught and talked about or even given a thought. I do think that you can think that two are most important.  I however just do not see it that way. I see it as these are the important ones and that they have their reasons. We have them so we do not mess things up and confuse people. If we forget one then it is our fault and we personally should know better.
